Zimbabwe: Newspaper Editors Are Arrested

The editor of the Zimbabwe Independent newspaper, Vincent Kahiya, and its news editor, Constantine Chimakure, were arrested Monday and charged with publishing falsehoods. The charges concern an article Thursday that named police officials and intelligence agents that it said were involved in the abduction of opposition and human rights activists last year. The article was drawn from court records filed by the attorney general’s office. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said in a statement that “it beggars belief that they are now being prosecuted for allegedly publishing falsehoods.” President Robert Mugabe’s government jailed many journalists, a practice civic leaders hoped would end under the new governm
